What Is Dropshipping, and Why the Math Matters

Dropshipping is a retail fulfillment model where you sell products without holding inventory. When a customer places an order on your store, you forward that order to a supplier — usually based in China, the United States, or Europe — who ships the product directly to the customer. You never touch the product. Your profit is the difference between what the customer pays you and what you pay the supplier, minus every other cost of doing business: advertising, payment processing, platform fees, returns, and customer support time.

This sounds simple, and on the surface it is. But the reason most new dropshippers lose money in their first three months is not that they pick bad products — it is that they get the math wrong. They confuse markup with margin. They calculate ROAS on revenue instead of on profit. They forget that payment processors take 2.9% plus a flat fee on every transaction. They price shipping as if it were free. Each of these errors is small in isolation, but stacked across hundreds of orders per month, they quietly turn a "profitable" store into a cash-burning hobby.

That is the problem Shmroz was built to solve. Every calculator on this site exists because we watched real dropshippers — friends, clients, readers of our guides — make the same avoidable mistakes. The Profit Margin Calculator forces you to enter payment processing fees, not just product cost. The ROAS Calculator shows you break-even ROAS next to actual ROAS, so you cannot accidentally scale a losing campaign. The Ad Budget Calculator links your daily spend to your gross margin, which is the only honest way to know whether scaling will make you richer or poorer.

And when you are ready to go deeper, read our complete dropshipping guide — it walks you through niche research, supplier vetting, store building, ad buying, and the financial discipline that separates the 5% of dropshippers who survive their first year from the 95% who do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these dropshipping calculators really free?
Yes. All 17 calculators and generators on Shmroz are 100% free, with no signup, no email wall, and no daily limit. We keep the site running through display advertising, which is disclosed in our disclaimer. You can use every tool as many times as you like.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No. Every tool runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to download, no plugin to install, and no account to create. Open the page, enter your numbers, and get your result instantly.
Which formula does the Profit Margin Calculator use?
Gross Profit = Selling Price − Product Cost − Payment Processing Fee − Shipping Cost (if you charge the customer nothing for shipping). Net Profit = Gross Profit − Ad Cost Allocated Per Sale. Profit Margin = Net Profit ÷ Selling Price × 100. The calculator also shows gross margin separately so you can compare the two.
What is break-even ROAS and why is it the most important number in dropshipping?
Break-even ROAS is the ad performance you need just to cover product cost and ad spend — to make exactly $0. It equals 1 ÷ Gross Margin. If your gross margin is 40%, your break-even ROAS is 2.5×. Anything below that loses money; anything above it makes money. Most dropshippers never calculate this and accidentally scale losing campaigns. Our ROAS Calculator shows both numbers side by side.
Can I use these tools for non-dropshipping ecommerce?
Absolutely. The math is identical whether you dropship, hold inventory, print on demand, or run a private-label brand. Profit margin, ROAS, LTV, CAC, AOV, and break-even are universal ecommerce metrics. Dropshipping just happens to be where most beginners need the most help because the cost structure is harder to see.
How accurate are the generators (store names, ad copy, etc.)?
The generators combine proven ecommerce copywriting patterns with your inputs. They will not replace a human copywriter for a flagship product launch, but they will give you 80% of the way there in 5 seconds. Always edit the output to match your brand voice, double-check trademark availability for any store name, and review product descriptions against your actual product features before publishing.
